Health authorities around the world have beenantic about using antibiotics to treat infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, but a new report suggests that the practice is not without risk.
In a new study, published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, researchers at a university-wide pharmacy found that the common antibiotic used to treat common infections was even more potent than the antibiotic that’s used to treat common infections.
“There is a huge and complex interplay between the antibiotic and the underlying bacterial infection,” said study lead author Dr. Jennifer S. Gagnon, professor of infectious diseases at the University of Southern California and a co-author of the study. “The antibiotic used to treat common infections is actually the most potent antibiotic to treat the disease.”
While the use of antibiotics for the treatment of common infections is relatively new, the antibiotic used in the study is still a top-selling antibiotic, costing about $6 billion a year to treat, Gagnon said.
The antibiotic used to treat infections in humans is bacteriostatic, which means it only targets the bacteria, which is why people who are exposed to the bacteria do not develop the disease, Gagnon said.
The bacteria are generally considered to be harmless and can live in environments such as the human mouth or lungs, she said. However, the bacteria can cause diseases in humans, including pneumonia, bronchitis, pneumonia and sinusitis.
In one study, which was presented at the American Society of Clinical and Othericrobial Chemists Scientific Sessions, Gagnon found that the use of antibiotics in patients with a bacterial infection led to antibiotic resistance in bacteria that had become resistant to other antibiotics.
The researchers analyzed the antibiotic use in 30 hospitals in the United States to see whether the antibiotic used to treat common infections was as potent as the antibiotic used in the study. The antibiotics used to treat the common infections in the U. S. were the most potent antibiotics in the study, at around $6 to $8 per gram.
The study looked at data from all the U. hospitals in the previous year, with the only exception being in Los Angeles, California, which reported an average of $4 per gram for the antibiotic used to treat common infections, the study authors wrote.
The researchers analyzed the antibiotic use in patients with a bacterial infection in the U. and found that antibiotic use is more potent than the antibiotic used to treat common infections in the study.
“While antibiotic use is a highly significant factor in the emergence of resistance to a class of antibiotics, it is still important to address the role that antibiotic use plays in the emergence of resistance,” said the study’s lead author Dr. Gagnon, a professor of infectious diseases at the University of Southern California.
“The role of antibiotic use in the emergence of antibiotic resistance is an important area of research,” said Gagnon. “This research is the first time that a study has looked at the use of antibiotics to treat common infections in humans.”

In the early 1950s, a small company, Bayer, manufactured and sold an antibiotic called Cefdinir. It was then sold to the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration.
Bayer discovered the antibiotic that was used to treat chlamydia and gonorrhea in 1953. It was later sold as Zithromax and was then sold under the brand name Azithromycin.
